The Derek Watkins Memorial Concert featured Star Guest Artists Chuck Findley on trumpet, and International vocalist Madeline Bell.
The Concert was held on Sunday March 2nd 2014 (Derek Watkins' birthday) and the performance involved 75 musicians, and a 40 strong crew to make it all happen on the night.
The concert was designed as a 'timeline' through the sparkling career of British trumpet giant Derek Watkins, who sadly left us on the 22nd March 2013.
75 musicians took in this unique concert, including the Spring Gardens Brass Band, Cornet soloist Freddie Ball and James Fountain, trumpet player Tom Gardner, The Super C Big Band led by Pete Beachill and Simon Gardner. The Super C Brass Ensemble, Serpentine Fire, A James Last Orchestra tribute, and musical direction by Eric Crees, Colin Sheen, Steve Sidwell and Dave Arch. The full credit listing of personnel involved is listed below.
A 20-page full colour programme was produced for the concert, and it takes the reader through Derek's timeline, from his first notes with his Grandfather's Brass Band, and follows his sparkling career, playing with some of the biggest names in the music business. This publication is crammed full of photographs from Derek's time with Benny Goodman, the Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland Big Band, Nelson's Column Big Band, Maynard Ferguson's Big Band, and of course The James Last Orchestra.
There are also wonderful images of Derek with his beloved family - even his wedding photographs when he married his wife Wendy.
A real keepsake, and the perfect accompaniment to the Memorial Concert DVD.
